Welcome back to the High School Corner!

This week we were fortunate enough to have two guest speakers visit our classroom.

Our first speaker was Mr. Craig Scherschel, a geologist and current SCM High School parent. He gave us an in-depth look at every feature of the volcanic formations that make up the Hawaiian islands, our trip destination this semester. Mr. Scherschel gave us some valuable insights that helped us a great deal in deciding where and when we wanted to visit certain locations. Whenever we are presented with the opportunity to learn from members of the St. Catherine’s community, we relish it, and we couldn’t have asked for a better person to give us a look at the fascinating geology of Hawaii.

Our next speaker was Mr. Jordi Baizan, a songwriter/musician and former SCM student and parent. In Writer’s Workshop, we have been doing a lot of work with poetry, and we have recently been tasked with writing our own poems. Because poetry is an intrinsically musical art form, it seemed only fitting that we hear from someone who lives and breathes songs. Mr. Baizan gave us a behind-the-scenes look at his writing process, which was a fantastic source of inspiration. He was even kind enough to share some of his original songs with us and the process of creating them! Feel free to check out the video below where we’ve compiled highlights from both our visitors.

Thank you, Mr. Scherschel and Mr. Baizan, for taking the time to come visit us last week!
