Over the past few months, our high school students have been learning as much as they can about the wonderful world of poetry in their Writer’s Workshop class. Over Christmas break, they were each tasked with finding a poem they enjoyed and wanted to further analyze. They chose poems from a variety of authors including C.P. Cavafy, Maya Angelou, Margaret Atwood, Robert Frost, and Walt Whitman. After choosing their poems, each student analyzed their structure, rhyme scheme and meter, syntax, word choice, figurative language, and any other characteristics of interest. After gaining a deep understanding of their poems, they wrote an analytical essay about them that also touched on the poem's connection to their personal lives. Then, students wrote their own original poems or songs that somehow responded to or expanded on the famous work they'd selected. As the final culmination of this work, they used their Tuesday Writer’s Workshop class period to share their poem and song creations with one another. They were extremely excited to spend a cozy afternoon together nerding-out over poetry; it was the perfect way to showcase their work. - Jacob B. and Sophia D.
