In the Infant Community, our children aged 14 months to three years begin to develop their independence and sense of community. The children develop their language and fine motor skills, care for animals and their environment, cook, dress themselves, pray, dance, make art, and practice grace and courtesy.

For St. Catherine’s adolescents the trip to Costa Rica is much more than just a Spanish and cultural immersion. Perhaps the most significant aspect of this journey was being able to experience independence - being away from families in order to make daily decisions for oneself is a key to becoming an adult. Research in the Children’s Eternal Rainforest gave students the opportunity to experience nature on a grand scale while working on a personal level. The students thanked us for allowing them freedom from their phones and social media for a few weeks and thought it was a good idea. Several students have expressed a desire to return to Monteverde to continue their research.
