High School Trip

High School New York City Travel Writing

SCM High School students travelled to New York City from December 1-8 as part of our Humanities studies of world history. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we needed to choose a domestic location for our travels and were pleasantly surprised at our ability to get a taste of world history in New York and incorporate elements of American history and economics studies from the past two years. This was the first high school trip any of our current students were able to take, and it was a great reminder of the joy, camaraderie, and deep engagement that traveling and experiencing history together brings.

To prepare, students studied topics including the United Nations, immigration to New York City, the September 11th attacks, New York as a world financial capital, Greek and Roman architecture, and Abstract Expressionism. We visited locations including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the 9/11 Memorial, Ellis Island, the Tenement Museum, Weeksville Heritage Center, Plymouth Church, and many more!

While traveling, students were asked to write short essays about a topic of their choice. They also worked in groups to create short films highlighting memorable experiences on their trip. One group opted to showcase the overall trip, and the other group chose to chronicle their excursion to Liberty and Ellis Islands.

We hope you enjoy!
