Personal Essays on an Unforgettable Journey

For ten days in November, the Adolescent Community traveled in big pink bus from Houston to Washington DC on a meticulously planned Peace Trip. The itinerary, which included stops in New Orleans, Birmingham, Selma, and Montgomery in Alabama, Oak Ridge in Tennessee, and Roanoke in Virginia, represented the themes studied in the classroom humanities courses (international relations, social justice, and the environment) and was researched and planned by the students.

A New Altar for St. Catherine's

We celebrate mass this week with a gift from the Friends of the Mass: a new altar table created entirely from a single magnificent slab of cottonwood. A labor of love and handcrafted dedication, the altar features a distinctive mahogany "butterfly keys" on the surface, and a "live-edge" design that preserves the natural bark of the tree. Fr. Tom Smithson, pastor of Corpus Christi, will bless St. Catherine's new altar table before the mass on Thursday. Click on the link to read the full article on the history and design of the altar.

Giving Thanks to Our School, Families, and Community

November is the national month for giving: for giving thanks, for counting our blessings, for contributing to the betterment of our families and community. We gratefully honor our co-founders, Sr. Edna Ann and Sr. Shirley Owens, for their foresight and dedication in establishing this school that educates our children and nurtures all of us. We are also thankful for the families: for the parents who, in each of the past five decades, supported the school in a myriad ways and paid it forward so that future families and future children would reap the benefits of their efforts. An Urban Vertical Garden: Building a Green Wall at St. Catherine’s

Hungarian landscape architect Ferenc Szentkiralyi-Toth flew in to Houston this week to help the AC build a green wall. When complete, the six-foot tall vertical structure will feature herbs and plants that will be sold at the AC Homegrown Market and will feature an irrigation system powered by the AC wind turbine. Modern urban planners and architects are increasingly turning to this experimental design technology as a solution for sustainable architecture. Visit the AC gardens to view this gravity defying example of a "living wall." Read more here!

Cardinal DiNardo Celebrates the 50th Anniversary of St. Catherine’s Montessori

Thank you to all who teach here, thank you to Sr. Edna...May the Lord smile upon all the parents who have the dedication to send their children here," blessed Cardinal DiNardo in his closing remarks last Saturday, September 24th, at a special liturgy celebrating St. Catherine's 50th Anniversary. His Eminence movingly, and at times humorously, wove Maria Montessori's work in respecting the individuality and beauty of each child into his homily, praising her as "someone who was really ahead of her time."
