Welcome back to the High School Corner!

We may be living in uncertain times, but in the High School we are certainly making the most of things. Last semester we did our best to adapt to a virtual setting with virtually no time to adapt. Now, with a summer full of preparation on the part of our guides, the High School operates like a well-oiled machine even when we’re all connecting through our machines!

Our first day was a fun one. We re-familiarized ourselves with Zoom as we introduced our incoming sophomores to the High School through some fun ice-breaking and competitive games. Our second day was set aside to introduce us to the new schedule and procedures. While a virtual setting is rarely, if ever, the ideal situation for hands-on learning, the guides certainly made use of their time this summer devising ways to keep the curriculum as engaging as possible. We ended our first week of school with a Brownie Night, an old tradition from the AC that is essentially a talent show with the crucial component of brownies added for maximum yumminess. Everyone was provided brownie mix in the bags of school supplies given to us by the guides at the beginning of the semester.

Among other goodies included was an owl pellet for us to dissect in science class. This is a fantastic example of engaging hands-on learning over Zoom. Another great example is creating our very own basic telescope from lenses and large cardboard tubes. Some people even went the extra-mile and decorated their telescopes!

As we discuss various comedies in Seminar, we are honing our comedic skills in Creative Expressions, learning about the ins and outs of comedy through fun games that we’ve adapted for Zoom. We will be doing a comedic performance at some point this year. If you would like to see the results of our owl pellet dissections, have a look at these pictures,
