About Our Chickens

Chickens

Dalton Copeland, 8th Year, Chicken Manager

We have chickens at the Timberside campus, 12 hens. The hens lay eggs that we wash and sell at our school market. We wash our eggs so the people who buy them do not buy dirty eggs, and it is quite satisfying to see a dirty egg become clean and perfect.

The chickens are really amazing creatures; for example, they have a 10 foot vertical and can “fly” about 50 feet from standing on the ground. Sometimes, they can fly even farther, depending on the terrain and whether or not they are standing on a structure.

The chickens are also  fun to take care of. We refill their water and food twice a week as well as rake out the poop in the nest and replace it with new fresh hay every day. Every 4 months, we scrub the coop walls and scrape the poop off the roost and thoroughly clean the chicken coop. Even after all of the work, it is all worth it. We really like and appreciate our animals, and we make sure they are healthy and treated with respect.

With of the other classes come to the chicken coop for a visit, and we will take a chicken out of the coop so they can pet it. We enjoy every moment we spend with our chickens.
