Welcome back to the High School Corner!

This past week, Houstonians tracked news of the chemical fires in Deer Park with horror. This environmental disaster provided a fascinating real-world example of man’s immense environmental impact for the students in AP Environmental Science. We started by reading an article published by Air Alliance Houston that provided information on the various chemicals being released into the atmosphere through these fires. We then began doing some individual research looking at everything from the long-term health effects of the released chemicals to the wind patterns and how they were affecting the dispersal of said chemicals. We even got a chance to chat with Lucy Randel, a former St. Catherine’s parent and Air Alliance Houston board member, who provided us with excellent resources for further study. It was exciting to be applying the knowledge we have been accumulating to a real-world problem.

Thank you for reading, and we hope to see you back next week!
