Welcome back to the High School Corner!

This Thursday we were lucky enough to learn about the wonders of ancient Rome from Louis Aulbach, an author and publisher, and Linda Gorski, the president of the Texas Archeological Society. Their presentation was primarily focused on the ancient site of Ostia Antica. This surprisingly well-preserved harbor city is conveniently located just 15 miles outside the city of Rome. We learned about the religion known as Mithraism which had many centers of worship in Ostia Antica. Not only did we get a chance to add to our knowledge of life in ancient Roman cities, we also got some great practical tips for traveling from our two speakers, who have been to Rome five times as part of their research in the area and have written three guide books about their findings. As a parting gift, Mr. Aulbach and Ms. Gorski left us with copies of the most recent journal of the Houston Archaeological Society, which contains three papers about their research in Ancient Rome. We are so grateful that they were willing to take time out of their day to come and share their passion for the ancient world with us.

Moving forward, we will be shifting our focus from classical Greece and Rome to the wonders of the Renaissance in preparation for the beautiful art and architecture we will be encountering in Florence and Rome.

Thank you for reading and come back next week for more from the High School!
