Welcome back to the High School Corner!

To supplement our classical history studies, art historian and SCM parent Sarah Costello came to the High School to talk about the history, art, and architecture of Athens and Rome. Athens, the heart of Greek culture and goddess Athena's city, has many temples dedicated to the Greek gods, one of them being the Parthenon. The Parthenon was the soul of Athens, serving as both a place of worship for the patron goddess Athena and a place to strengthen community bonds through joyous festivals. Greek art and architecture also had a lot of influence on Roman artistic expression, which took a great deal of inspiration from Greek works. Yet as Roman civilization grew, it developed a distinct artistic identity. Dr. Costello emphasized the differences between the Greeks and Romans, as people often conflate the two when in reality they were disparate and fascinating peoples.

Dr. Costello also gave us some insight into some of the best things to do while on our trip, so we can have the best experience possible. Her visit got us even more excited to learn about these societies, and we are so grateful for her time.

Thank you for reading, and we will see you next week!
