Welcome back to the High School Corner!

In the High School, we are pushed to examine the connections between all of our classes— even those that might seem like polar opposites at first glance. As we are transitioning into learning about classical history in preparation for our trip to Greece and Italy, the interconnectedness of literature, math, philosophy, and classical history is becoming evident.

This past week, we examined three great Greek philosophers, Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, and their contributions to Western Civilization. We integrated this into our literary curriculum by discussing how these three men perceived and utilized the written word. In our math class, we were introduced to Thales, another Greek philosopher and mathematician. Though often hidden in Euclid’s shadow, Thales discovered and proved some of the most essential geometric proofs, including the Vertical Angle Theorem and the Angle-Angle-Side Postulate. This week has given us a fantastic look at the ancient world from some really interesting angles.

In other news, we welcomed a representative from Southwestern University and were given the opportunity to discuss the college admissions process with him. Southwestern is a liberal arts college located in Georgetown, Texas, and is the alma mater of one of our guides, Mrs. Amy Lindsey. We enjoyed learning about Southwestern and look forward to interacting with more university representatives as the year continues!

Don’t forget to tune in next week!
