Ruth Scherschel, '20

Ruth graduated cum laude in May from Whitman College with a Bachelor of Arts in Film and Media Studies and a Bachelor of Arts in German Studies. She also graduated as a member of Delta Phi Alpha, the National German Honor Society.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR YOU?

This summer I am working in New Hampshire at a construction job. I am excited to learn a new trade and be able to spend time with the family I have living in the area! After the summer, I plan to spend a year or two doing seasonal work at national parks in the west, and then eventually make my way into the producing and directing side of the film industry.

HOW DID SCM HIGH SCHOOL PREPARE YOU FOR YOUR NEXT STEPS?

In addition to preparing me well academically for college, SCM High School (along with my entire Montessori experience) gave me practical skills and an interest in the environment. Without my SCM background, my confidence in my ability to explore new places on my own and my desire to look for ways to care for the earth would not be the same. 

WHAT WORDS OF WISDOM WOULD YOU LIKE TO PASS ON TO OUR CURRENT HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS?

My biggest advice for the current high school student would be to try everything and not be afraid to take the time to do it! I tried out classes in almost every other subject before I settled on my major, and I'm still grateful for everything I learned about the world and myself in those courses.
