Celebrating the Senior Capstone: A Culmination of Montessori Education

Each spring, St. Catherine’s High School seniors take the stage for their Senior Capstone presentations, a hallmark event that represents the pinnacle of their Montessori educational journey. These TED Talk-style presentations—delivered with confidence and poise—demonstrate years of independent exploration, rigorous research, and deeply personal inquiry. More than academic exercises, they reflect the purpose, maturity, and perspective shaped by a Montessori education rooted in faith, personal responsibility, and meaningful contribution.
The Senior Capstone is more than a project; it is a transformative experience that embodies Montessori’s commitment to individualized, student-centered learning. Each senior designs their capstone project to explore a topic of high personal interest, engaging in self-directed research in collaboration with an adult mentor–an expert in their chosen field–who provides guidance and real-world insight. This professional partnership deepens the experience, connecting classroom inquiry with meaningful application beyond the school walls. Through this process, students demonstrate skills developed over a lifetime at St. Catherine’s, including project management, critical thinking, and effective communication–embodying essential characteristics of a St. Catherine’s graduate.
An Evening of Discovery and Engagement
Capstone Night opens with formal presentations, each highlighting a unique academic or service-oriented pursuit. Following the talks, guests are invited to mingle with students, ask questions, and engage with concrete or visual project components. Casual conversations during light refreshments foster deeper connections and invite the community into the students’ intellectual and personal growth.
Projects span a wide range of disciplines and perspectives, reflecting the depth of students’ research and the impact of their mentor-mentee partnerships. This year’s event featured:
- Ava's study and comparison of Hungarian Architecture with mentorship from Herman Sutter
- Caroline's research of allogenic stem cell transplants and Graft-Versus-Host Disease with Dr. Victor Lewis
- Laura’s examination of the Great Flood Myths of the World, mentored by Dirk Van Tuerenhout.
- Gaby’s exploration of the Legal Status of Marijuana and Its Effects on Developing Brains with mentor, Anna Kirkland
- Alexa’s service project and narrative, Bigger Than a Story: Homelessness in Houston, with mentor, Ronald Marshall
- Francis’ research on self-sustaining ecosystems and creation of a working terrarium with Gabriela Velez

The Montessori Journey to Capstone
The Senior Capstone is the culmination of a Montessori education that begins in infancy. At St. Catherine’s, students progress through developmental stages characterized by growing independence, curiosity, and responsibility. Early sensorial experiences in the Infant Community and Primary programs lay the foundation for observation, inquiry, and creative expression.
By the Elementary years, students expand this foundation through collaborative research and increasingly abstract reasoning. Their questions become more expansive, their writing more structured, and their curiosity more socially oriented—leading to group projects, scientific investigations, and presentations that connect learning to the wider world. This experience develops the reasoning mind and social skills essential for meaningful, lifelong learning.
In adolescence, this learning becomes more applied. Students in the Adolescent Community engage with real-world problems through economic initiatives and integrated study and work. The high school years build on these experiences with deeper academic rigor, independent studies, internships, and ongoing reflection—all preparing students for self-directed work and engagement with the adult world.
As part of this continuum, students from the Adolescent Community and both Elementary levels attend the Capstone dress rehearsals, offering younger students a powerful glimpse of what lies ahead. This extended vision of mixed-age learning brings a core Montessori principle to life: that inspiration and motivation often come from within the community, as students see firsthand where curiosity, commitment, and creativity can lead when nurtured over time.
The Senior Capstone represents the synthesis of these experiences. It is a celebration of the whole person, a reflection of their personal interests and unique journey through childhood and adolescence, and a testament to the enduring value of a Montessori education.
Living the Mission
As a Catholic Montessori school, St. Catherine’s is dedicated to awakening in its students an awareness of their gifts and responsibilities as individuals in relationship with Jesus Christ and as stewards of the global community. The Senior Capstone exemplifies this mission, encouraging students to pursue their passions with purpose, integrity, and creativity.
Through this event, the St. Catherine’s community witnessed not only the academic achievements of its seniors but also their transformation into thoughtful, articulate, and compassionate individuals ready to make a positive impact on the world.
At St. Catherine’s, learning is a lifelong journey rooted in faith, community, and the pursuit of meaningful work. Capstone Night celebrates where our students are and offers a glimpse of where they’re going–showcasing the outcome and transformative power of a Montessori education that sees, supports, and challenges each child to grow into their fullest potential.
