The Yvonne Jacobs Parent Education Fund
back to current news & events>>
In honor of Yvonne Jacobs, an extraordinary parent who was very involved at St. Catherine’s when her children were here, the PSO designated the Yvonne Jacobs Parent Education Fund to provide opportunities for parent education to the St. Catherine’s community. PSO money is set aside for this purpose and the NAMTA booklets we received in the past are an example of the kinds of materials provided by this fund.
Last year, the PSO discussed possible parent education programs and activities for this fund. Some of the suggestions included a talk or presentation about Internet safety (how to teach children about Internet risks and how to monitor their activities to insure a safe and educational environment) and a presentation by a speech therapist discussing speech and language development in young children. Both of these presentations were done last year.
Another idea that was discussed was a parent education book club or home study program. Judy McCullough presented this idea and suggested, as the first book, “How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk” by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish. Other books could be added and other formats for the program could be considered, as well.
To help get this kind of book club or workshop going, we need your input. If you would be interested in a book club that has a parent education theme and format, please take a moment to answer the following questions, and send your answers to Gretchen Penny at school or through email at gpenny@houston.rr.com.
