After School Athletics

A variety of after-school athletics are offered to the students throughout the school year.  These activities are offered for all grade levels, from Primary through the Adolescent Community.  The Athletics Department and Booster Club are working to build an athletics tradition that provides opportunities for students of all skill levels to enjoy the excitement, community and physical development of after-school sports.

Greater Houston Catholic Athletic Association

St. Catherine’s is a member of the GHCAA (Greater Houston Catholic Athletic Association).  The GHCAA is made up of 52 Houston-area Catholic Schools.  Student’s in their 5th – 8th year participate in this competitive athletic league.  (SCM students are eligible at the 4th year level).

Primary and Lower Elementary Fall & Spring Soccer

St. Catherine’s Montessori Primary and Lower Elementary Soccer is a parent volunteer run activity for our younger students.  This is a noncompetitive soccer league.  There are no goalies and the score is not kept.  The emphasis is on sportsmanship, learning beginner soccer skills, teamwork and fun.

The practices and games are held Saturday mornings from 9:00 – 10:30 with a Fall and Spring season.  Parents serve as coaches, and all parents are welcome to participate, regardless of soccer experience.

Primary/Lower Elementary Soccer Guidelines

Dates:
Fall and Spring dates TBA. Saturday mornings, 9:00-10:30 am. Each session will include a 30-45 minute practice and a 30-40-minute game.

Format:
Primary: Micro soccer format. 3 on 3. No goalie. Small field 25 yds x 35 yds. No score is kept.
Lower El: 
Micro soccer format. 4 on 4. No goalie. Field size 30yds x 40yds. No score is kept.

Location: St. Catherine's Montessori Athletic Field

League Fee: $20

Equipment Needed for Each Player
Ball: Each player must bring a size 3 ball with his/her NAME on it.
Shin Guards: Each player must wear shin guards at all practices and games.
Soccer Cleats are recommended but not required. No metal cleats allowed.

Volunteers Needed:
Volunteers are needed to assist in practice and games.

Liability Form:
Each player must have a signed liability form (participation release) before participating. These will be collected before the first game. Virtus training is not a requirement for parent participation, but is encouraged.

Practice and Game Guidelines:
Practice Format – All players will do practice drills together.
Game Format – After the practice session is complete the players will be broken into different teams and they will begin the game.
The teams will be made up with a balanced skill set. Each week the teams can be made up of different players.

Things Parents Need To Know:
Players who lose interest or are too tired to play will be asked to sit on the sideline and support their team.

We ask that parents try to encourage the children to watch and support their teammates and get back into the practice/game when rested.

A responsible adult for each player MUST be onsite at all times.

Gymnastics

Keith Peters of Creative Development Gymnastics has been a part of the St. Catherine’s community since 1981.  Coach Keith offers weekly gymnastics lessons to Primary students throughout the school year, after school. He also offers summer camps at St. Catherine’s.  Coach Keith currently serves as head gymnastics coach at Debakey High School for Health Professions and is a certified instructor by USA-Gymnastics.

Roller Hockey

Keith Peters provides a morning roller hockey league that meets once a week at St. Catherine’s.  Participation is available to Lower Elementary Students and up.

Facilities

We are very fortunate to have some wonderful facilities for our students to use for after-school sports.  Our campus includes a gymnasium and three-acre athletics field.
