Mary Hamilton
Mary is both a parent and a staff member at St. Catherine’s. After years in the graphic design field and support positions, she made the move to be a stay-at-home mom until taking on the afternoon receptionist responsibilities at the school. “Since I cannot be part of Montessori and St. Catherine’s as a child, I did the next best thing, I took the opportunity to work here.”
Mary and her husband, Dave, have one son, Ted, who is in St. Catherine’s Adolescent Community. They have been part of Ted’s Montessori journey since age 3, starting at Montessori schools in Austin, and entering St. Catherine’s upon their move to Houston. “Montessori allows the child to develop at their pace. It allows them to come to love working, or in our terms, learning, exploring, investigating, applying, doing.”
Watching Ted grow into a responsible, self-reliant individual is one of Mary’s joys in life. She is also involved in his Scout Troop and has gone camping as part of the Adult Patrol on all but two campouts to date. One memorable campout resulted in the rekindling of her love for back country backpacking and hiking. A camera is usually in hand to snap pictures for the Scout web site, scrap booking, and last but not least, the school’s yearbook. There are many other things she enjoys: reading, sewing, walking, but her family is at the top of the list, and a close second is a Starbuck’s Toffee Nut Latte.
