Janice Jeys

Janice received her Bachelor of Arts in Art History with Minors in Psychology and Fine Arts from the University of Houston. She received her AMS Primary Montessori Certificate in 1987 and did her elementary Montessori training with Sanford Jones - past president of AMI.

In 1987, Janice began her career as a Montessorian. Most of those ensuing years as the guide in the environment have been in Primary, with one year as an elementary guide. Previous to her Montessori years, Janice taught art at the Art Institute of Houston for 2 years and worked as a Medical Illustrator in the Medical Center for 6 years. She has worked at St. Catherine’s since 1999.

Janice enjoys gardening, drawing, painting, gallery hopping, and being a student in her spare time. A strong commitment to making Montessori environments increasingly available in Houston’s public schools is behind her volunteer work with the Houston All Montessori Project.

Janice’s comments about Montessori - “Upon my first visit to my nieces’ Montessori environments, I became intrigued with the “something different” that was going on there. I took a part time job assisting in a Montessori toddler environment one fall and spent time with toddlers eating lunch without Mom for the first time. These “little ones” were taking a nap away from home for the first time. I recall being amazed by the competence and presence of these young beings in this new and unexpected circumstance. I was immediately hooked. Reading only further confirmed my love for this philosophy which views children not as unfinished human beings but rather as “the other pole of humanity.”
